Restoring Sight, Restoring Independence

Blurry vision. Eye pain. A child struggling to learn, or an adult unable to work safely. In rural Haiti, treatable vision problems can limit independence when eye care is out of reach. FOTCOH’s Vision program provides essential eye care that helps patients protect sight, access treatment, and regain confidence in daily life.

Vision

Vision Loss That Limits Everyday Life

In rural Haiti, access to eye care is extremely limited, leaving many patients to live with untreated vision problems that affect their ability to work, learn, travel, and care for themselves.

Cataracts, glaucoma, eye irritation, sun exposure, and uncorrected vision needs can all create serious barriers to daily life. For many patients, even basic eyeglasses or prescription eye drops are difficult to access, making treatable vision issues a major threat to independence and quality of life.

Rolando’s Story

When Dr. Nelson asked whether she knew what FOTCOH could pay her, Dr. Ritza answered: “It doesn’t matter. You pay me whatever you want, but I want to be part of the program.”

At 17, Rolando Was Losing Sight in One Eye

After an accident left 17-year-old Rolando in severe pain and at risk of losing sight in one eye, his family came to FOTCOH for help. What began as fear for his future became relief, healing, and renewed hope.

Through FOTCOH’s Vision program, Rolando received surgery that restored his sight and relieved his pain. Today, he continues follow-up care alongside many others who depend on the program for treatment they otherwise could not access.

How FOTCOH Responds

Expanding Access to Essential Eye Care

Launched in 2025, FOTCOH’s Vision program quickly became one of the organization’s most in-demand services, revealing a significant unmet need across the region.

Led by trained ophthalmology professionals, including Dr. Ritza, a U.S.-trained ophthalmologist, the program provides eye exams, diagnoses, corrective lenses, prescription eye drops, and referrals or support for surgical care when needed.

As the program continues to grow, Vision Care is expected to become one of FOTCOH’s largest areas of impact.
