Core Principles

The Principles That Guide Our Care

Community Health Read moreRead less

FOTCOH’s work extends beyond treating illness. Through health care programs, preventive care, health education, nutrition support, clean water initiatives, and community outreach, the organization is committed to improving long-term health outcomes for families and communities across rural Haiti.

Patients are cared for with dignity and respect through clean facilities, private treatment spaces, organized clinic operations, and compassionate care designed to meet both immediate and long-term health needs.

Sustainable Health Care Read moreRead less

FOTCOH is committed to building a health care model that can operate consistently and reliably over time. Through year-round care, investment in infrastructure, solar-powered operations, and continuity of treatment, the organization is creating a stronger foundation for long-term health care access in rural Haiti.

A critical part of that foundation is FOTCOH’s pharmacy. In an area where stocked medications are often difficult or impossible to access, FOTCOH brings in the medicine needed to support treatment, manage ongoing conditions, and help patients receive the care prescribed by their medical team.

Programs like the Women’s Health Initiative also focus on sustainable education, including breastfeeding support and maternal health guidance that helps strengthen health outcomes for a growing community.

Haitian Leadership Read moreRead less

FOTCOH believes lasting impact must be led by the people who understand the community best.

Health care in rural Haiti cannot be shaped through an outside lens. The needs, barriers, resources, culture, and daily realities are different, which is why Haitian medical professionals and operational leaders guide patient care, clinic operations, and long-term planning.

Their leadership strengthens trust, improves continuity of care, and ensures FOTCOH’s programs are built around the people they serve, not outside assumptions about what care should look like.

Stewardship of Donor Funds Read moreRead less

FOTCOH is committed to using donor support responsibly, transparently, and effectively. Through financial oversight, board governance, collaborative reporting, and careful operational planning, the organization successfully maximizes every dollar entrusted to its mission.

This commitment helps ensure donor support directly strengthens health care access, community programs, medical infrastructure, and long-term sustainability.

Rooted in Community

How Our Model Works

FOTCOH’s model is built on medical and operational leaders who live and work in Haiti. Haitian medical and operational leaders bring the cultural understanding, local expertise, and trusted relationships needed to shape care around the real needs of the communities they serve.

Many have grown with FOTCOH over decades, helping build a health care system rooted in trust, dignity, and continuity. Today, FOTCOH is known throughout the region as “Kay Lavi,” or “House of Life” — a reflection of the care, stability, and hope it provides.

“FOTCOH’s success is largely due to Boyer and his staff, because they’re making it work.”
— Dick Hammond, Co-Founder
“What Dick wanted was a mutual respect between those giving the care and those receiving the care.”

Sustainability Philosophy

Building a Model Designed to Last

In rural Haiti, sustainable health care depends on more than medical care alone. It requires power, fuel, maintenance, organization, patient records, medicine, trained staff, and systems that can hold up in a challenging environment.

That is why FOTCOH has invested in the infrastructure needed to operate with consistency. The clinic hasn’t had reliable grid electricity for years, and generator fuel is hard to get safely. Solar power keeps the clinic open without interruption. Ongoing building maintenance, pharmacy access, medical records, and organized patient care all help create stability for both patients and staff.

Sustainability also means protecting dignity. Patients are welcomed into a clean, organized clinic with a covered triage area, private treatment areas, clean latrines, and a patient-centered system that keeps high-volume clinic days calm and respectful. Even when lines stretch far beyond the clinic walls, FOTCOH’s approach is designed to treat every person with care, order, and humanity.
